Bridgetown Jewish Synagogue

Bridgetown Jewish Synagogue – Barbados’ first Jewish settlement were individuals from Recife, Brazil, who built their house of worship in 1654, only to have to destroyed by a hurricane in 1831.  After rebuilding it, the synagogue fell into disrepair, and was sold in 1929.  The Jewish community brought it back in 1983, and restored it to its present form with its beautiful Gothic arches.  It is now a Barbados National Trust protected building and an active synagogue.  This was, in effect, one of the earliest Jewish settlements in the Americas.
